Transfer to Illinois State University

Transferring Courses

As a transfer student applying to Illinois State University, we have a number of different resources available to help you figure out both how much credit your prior coursework will count towards, as well as what requirements Illinois State has that may be fulfilled by work you've already done.

Our Articulation Handbook assists community college students throughout the transfer process. It provides the mechanics for the process and the guide to the policies important to community college transfer students preparing to enter Illinois State University.

The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI)

The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) is a statewide transfer program, which is transferable among more then 100 participating college or universities in Illinois. IAI is ideal for students who know they are eventually going to transfer but are undecided on the college or university to which they will transfer.

All college or university participating in the IAI General Education program have agreed to accept the General Education package in-lieu of their own comparable lower-division general education requirements. Keep in mind, the IAI General Education program works as a package, not individual course-to-course transfer.

Transferring to Illinois State with a completed IAI General Education package will satisfy Illinois State's general education requirements. You can find out more about IAI at the iTransfer site.

Course Applicability System (CAS)

Another online tool is the Course Applicability System (CAS). CAS is ideal for students who know where they want to transfer and have a specific major in mind. With CAS, you can input your coursework from one college or university and see exactly how it will transfer to another. You can also run a planning guide that will show how your transfer credit applies to a particular degree at another college or university. This process allows you to see just how many hours it will take you to graduate.

CAS is also a good tool for students who plan on taking a course at another college or university over the summer while they are away from their home campus. For example, if you want to take a course at your local community college and you want to know how and if it will transfer back to your native college or university, you can use the Course Equivalency Guides on CAS. You can find out more about CAS at by visiting CAS on the Web.
