Statement of Transfer Credit

Each transfer student admitted to Illinois State will receive a statement of transfer/examination credit awarded and a letter of explanation. All transfer credit is evaluated on a course-by-course basis and included within the transfer statement.

  • A maximum of 66 semester hours, plus four hours of physical education activity hours from a two-year institution are applicable toward the total number of hours required to graduate with a bachelor’s degree.
  • A maximum of 90 semester hours from a four-year and/or a combination of a two-year and a four-year institution are applicable toward the total number of hours required to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. Transfer credit is awarded for grades of D or better. Only credit hours transfer; grades are not transferable.

Transfer credit is evaluated and placed according to the course numbering system from the transfer institution. Thus, senior college level credit (junior and senior level courses) is awarded only for those courses designated senior level at the transfer institution. No credit from a two-year college is recognized as senior college level credit.

Send additional transcripts as work is completed, showing degree and credits earned, if applicable.

In the next few weeks you will receive your statement of transfer/examination credit in the mail. The form above is similar to the one you will receive.

Sample statement of transfer/examination credit will contain:

  • Your UID (nine-digit university identification number)
  • Illinois State catalog year assigned to you which lists your graduation requirements
  • Illinois State University will determine the most appropriate placement into a general education option.
  • Course transfers as a general education course for the Illinois Articulation Initiative.
  • An elective course transfers, but does not serve as a direct equivalent to an Illinois State course.
  • Every student must pass an examination on the Constitution of Illinois, the United States, and the proper use of the American flag at the college level.
