Transfer to Illinois State University

Transferring Course Credit

In the next few weeks you should receive your Statement of Transfer/Examination Credit in the mail. If you do not receive the statement within four weeks from your acceptance to the university, please call the Admissions Office at (800) 366-2478. For information regarding the transfer of your credits before you receive your statement, please visit the Course Applicability System and iTransfer Web site.

Transfer credit is evaluated on a course by course basis and will be listed on your transfer statement.  Please note:

  • A maximum of 66 semester hours from a two-year institution are applicable toward the total number of hours required to graduate with a bachelor’s degree.
  • A maximum of 90 semester hours from a four-year and/or a combination of a two-year and four-year institution are applicable toward the total number of hours required to graduate with a bachelor’s degree.

Transfer credit is awarded for grades of D or better. However, some departments/schools require grades of C or better and you may need to repeat the course for a better grade. Only credit hours transfer; grades are not transferable. Your Illinois State University grade point average is calculated using only credits earned at Illinois State University.

Illinois State University operates on a semester calendar; therefore, hours taken at an institution following a quarter or other calendar will be converted to semester hours.

Transfer credit is evaluated and placed according to the course numbering system from the transfer institution. Thus, senior college level credit (junior and senior level courses) is awarded only for those courses designated senior college level or upper division at the transfer institution. No credit from a community college is recognized as senior college level credit.

Students who have earned a baccalaureate-oriented associate degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States will be considered to have met the General Education requirements.
